Circumcision And The Bible - What Does The Bible Say About Circumcising?

Should I Circumcise My Son?
We had our son circumcised in the hospital the day we brought him home (so he was 3 days old). Both his father and I didn't want it done (dad isn't circ'd), but due to the pressure of family, buckled and had it done anyway. I regret it all the time. The reason (according to family) to have it done was religious - which I still don't get (we are Christian) - they say it's in the bible...yet, for a long time I didn't understand how those laws effect us now...
We basically had our minds made up before the birth that we didn't want to have our son circumcised.. But BOTH our mothers were there the day the pediatrician came in and asked about circ'ing. We said "no", but as soon the Pediatrician left the room, both moms started ranting about how it's in the bible, and not only that, they knew people who had to have it done later in life and how painful it was.
So after about an hour of debating, we reluctantly said, "fine, we'll do it." It's not something I can say I beat myself up over. I just wish I had prepared myself more at the time. The only info I was finding was about cleanliness, etc (but to me none of the info was concrete enough for me to justify it, which was why we originally decided no). But after the whole bible schpiel we got, we didn't want to be "wrong" and have our son possibly suffer through needing to be circumcised later in life.
Doctors didn't believe babies could feel pain?!
Now I know better and like I said I wish I would have done a lot more research to "defend" our decision (even though I really shouldn't have had to). Don't get me wrong. I have a wonderful and usually supportive family, this is just one of those things I should have stuck up for my beliefs on more.
When I found out I was pregnant with our second son, I decided I needed to get answers before making the same decision. Both my husband and I don't want to have our son circumcised. Having so much regret with the first circumcision, I don't want those same feelings without a sound reason to back them up. I hated the idea of the circumcision the first time it was done; I didn't understand why it needed to be done. Didn't God create us the way he wanted us to be?
1 Corinthians 12:18 (NIV)
"But in fact God has arranged the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. "

“If letting a doctor circumcise a baby in the hospital fulfills a religious requirement, it seems to me that if a nurse spills water on a baby's head, we can consider him baptised.”
Circumcision today is traditionally performed as part of a Jewish ceremony by a religious circumciser. There are usually family members invited and a pastor or priest there to read a scripture before, during, or after circumcision.
Jesus was circumcised because he was Jewish - If you are not Jewish, the law and covenant that was given to Abraham simply does not apply to you!
Romans 2:25-29 (New American Standard Bible)
25For indeed circumcision is of value if you practice the Law; but if you are a transgressor of the Law, your circumcision has become uncircumcision. 26So if the uncircumcised man keeps the requirements of the Law, will not his uncircumcision be regarded as circumcision? 27And he who is physically uncircumcised, if he keeps the Law, will he not judge you who though having the letter of the Law and circumcision are a transgressor of the Law? 28For he is not a Jew who is one outwardly, nor is circumcision that which is outward in the flesh . 29But he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that which is of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter; and his praise is not from men , but from God .
"The requirement for circumcision relates to the Old Testament Jews, and to them only, according to the covenant given to Abraham."

Romans 4:1-16 (New American Standard Bible))
1What then shall we say that Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh , has found? 2For if Abraham was justified by works , he has something to boast about , but not before God. 3For what does the Scripture say? "ABRAHAM BELIEVED GOD , AND IT WAS CREDITED TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS ."
4Now to the one who works , his wage is not credited as a favor , but as what is due. 5But to the one who does not work, but believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited as righteousness, 6just as David also speaks of the blessing on the man to whom God credits righteousness apart from works :
7"BLESSED ARE THOSE WHOSE LAWLESS DEEDS HAVE BEEN FORGIVEN , AND WHOSE SINS HAVE BEEN COVERED.
8"BLESSED IS THE MAN WHOSE SIN THE LORD WILL NOT TAKE INTO ACCOUNT."
9Is this blessing then on the circumcised, or on the uncircumcised also? For we say, "FAITH WAS CREDITED TO ABRAHAM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS." 10How then was it credited? While he was circumcised, or uncircumcised? Not while circumcised, but while uncircumcised; 11and he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had while uncircumcised, so that he might be the father of all who believe without being circumcised, that righteousness might be credited to them, 12and the father of circumcision to those who not only are of the circumcision, but who also follow in the steps of the faith of our father Abraham which he had while uncircumcised.
13For the promise to Abraham or to his descendants that he would be heir of the world was not through the Law, but through the righteousness of faith. 14For if those who are of the Law are heirs, faith is made void and the promise is nullified; 15for the Law brings about wrath, but where there is no law, there also is no violation .
16For this reason it is by faith, in order that it may be in accordance with grace, so that the promise will be guaranteed to all the descendants, not only to those who are of the Law, but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all,
"The Biblical covenant with God was that boys would be circumcised and the Jews (or anyone converting to Judaism, which was possible) had to obey all the rules - such as not eating pork (or various other meats such as shellfish), not eating (or preparing) meat and milk together, not touching a menstruating woman, offering various sacrifices and a plethora of others."

"There is a passage in the bible that says something along the lines of "you may not circumcise in the name of Christianity". It's most clearly expressed in the Letter to the Church in Galatea."
Galatians 5:1-4 (NIV)
1It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.
2Mark my words! I, Paul, tell you that if you let yourselves be circumcised, Christ will be of no value to you at all. 3Again I declare to every man who lets himself be circumcised that he is obligated to obey the whole law. 4You who are trying to be justified by law have been alienated from Christ; you have fallen away from grace.
It Doesn’t Matter if Someone is Circumcised or Un-Circumcised
Circumcision is more of a personal decision or a "covenant" that you are making with God - so is it one that you should be making for your child? I personally do not believe so. I believe that if he does decide to be circumcised, it is something that should be his choice later in life because of a personal conviction. Either way, God will not cut you off for your decision.
Galatians 5:6 (New American Standard Bible)
For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything, but faith working through love .
Galatians 6:12-15 (NIV)
12Those who desire to make a good showing in the flesh try to compel you to be circumcised, simply so that they will not be persecuted for the cross of Christ. 13For those who are circumcised do not even keep the Law themselves, but they desire to have you circumcised so that they may boast in your flesh. 14But may it never be that I would boast, except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. 15For neither is circumcision anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation .

Fools. Jesus is the king of the Jews, he is the Lord and savior of the world. We are all also sons of Abraham. Just because we aren't Jews doesn't mean we have to be so indifferent, Jesus was a Jew! The Bible clearly states that the Jews are Gods people. I am no better, no different than a Jew or any other race in fact. I am a son of God and I'm not sure which God you serve. I thoroughly enjoyed your false translation of the scriptures, you should be ashamed.
By the way, it is a known fact that you can keep your penis much cleaner if you are circumcised, honestly, please.
I strive to be like Jesus Christ my savior everyday, and he was circumcised.
In most bibles the word law is taken from torah and torah means teachings. Paul say in Galatians 5:11, "And as For me, brothers, if I am still preaching that circumcision is necessary, why am I still being persecuted?" Yeshua (Jesus) says in John 14:15 If you love me, you will keep my commands
READ MATTHEW 5:17"Don't think that i have come to abolish the teaching (LAW)...
All I have to say is read, pray to god so he may you the answer, the more you read the bible and pray, the better you will understand your question. Also read Romand chapter 4, 5 I believe. Jesus said that one who is circumcised but does not do gods will, what good is it on him to be circumcised. I believe that as long as you are a holy person and follow gods laws you'll be ok. God want us to be loving people, to be as his image. Love, Love is the key.
I just found something in 1st of Corinthians. Read this and the answer is there.
Jesus never talked about circumcision, i just do not understand why Paul wrote such things in Galatians, it is true that a man who does not believe in God would not benefit too much from a circumcision, but why should not we just do things what God told us? If God said that we should make it for the baby, why should we wait for his decision? What I do not really understand is that why the people make the circumcision nowadays not like the way it was when Mose or Abraham had done. They did not cut so much foreskin like it is Today and they also use flint Stone.
LWOOD= you sound like a very ignorant, evil liar. stay away from children you sick f#@k!
You left out what it says in Genesis about circumcision, and it was said by God himself: Genesis 17: 10. This is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and you and thy seed after thee; Every man child among you shall be circumcised.
I am a registered nurse and I can tell you in no uncertain terms that adult circumcision is very, very painful and hard on the adult patient. It is supposed to be an outpatient procedure but I have seen men admitted due to complications.
I have also cared for uncircumcised men and many have expressed how truly disgusted they are with the appearance of their penis and they have also discussed how much ridicule they had to endure in high school due to other boys seeing them in the locker room and then telling everyone they could about the "bun on their weinie." Some even report that being uncircumcised is painful and I can tell you myself the uncircumcised penis can get very dirty, gross dirty if not properly cared for. Personally I wouldn't fathom touching a man who is still intact, it looks unnatural.
It is your choice to make but I do know for a fact that the American Academy of Pediatrics is getting ready to revise their stance on circumcision, their statement is neutral but that will change in the summer of 2011, the CDC will also release a statement to concur with the AAP, all of this is in light of new studies that prove there are indeed health benefits to circumcision.
Please read the information found at this link, the information found here has been published in reputable medical journals and it gives both sides of the story regarding the circumcision debate. http://circinfo.net/
wow, such controversy. Just think of all those women who had intercourse from 200 AD until the 1900's with all those dirty, unclean, disgusting men. Yikes, those were my parents, my grandparents, my great greatgrand......... Let's face it, if you don't clean yourself you will be dirty. I could say the same about guys who don't shave or brush their teeth regularly.
@ Buffy: Pink flamingos are hatched as brown birds and will grow up to be brown birds if they don't eat a certain algae that turns them pink. Does that make those brown flamingos unnatural? How can being intact be unnatural? It would be more unnatural to remove something nature gave you. Many girls in Africa are circumcised (removal of the skin covering the clitoris), but we don't practice cutting females in the states, would that be unnatural? I'm sure if you were accustomed to something for a long period of time it would seem natural to you, but if we removed the left hand of every child for a couple of generations then someone might say that a two-hand person was weird. As for the men who claim to be in pain over being intact due to health reasons and due to uncleanliness, I must agree with Gran... take a bath. I have heard of women who needed a bath, but we don't cut them up. We teach our children (male and female) to wash behind their ears. According to what you said, wouldn't it be better to just cut their ears off at an early age so that they could skip washing those unnatural pieces of skin in the bath? I am intact myself and I can tell you that the natural covering to my beautiful penis is sensitive to my lady's touch in a very good way and pleasing to her as it allows for less friction during sex. She loves my NATURAL penis and so do I. I am a man who is old enough to make that decision for myself and I choose to keep what God has given me.
You are so wrong about circumcision . Its a commandment not a jewish thing. But dont feel pressured you are the mother . Its your decision. No one can or should tell you what to do with your child.
I am very grateful to my parents for leaving me intact as God created me to be. I can personally attest that cleanliness is not an issue, the foreskin is no dirtier than any other part of the body, and in fact requires only the most basic hygienic attention. Knowing what i do now about the risks and alleged benefits of circumcision i don't think it can be justified any more than cutting of an infants eyelids or ears. There is simply no reason for it, medical or otherwise.
my nephew was not circumcised at birth and unfortunately he had many painful urinary tract infections and kidney infections as a young child and had to undergo many painful procedures with a scope during which he was not given anesthesia, and ultimately he had to be circumcised at the age of 5. I can only say that my sons were circumcised at birth and only cried for about 30 seconds and have thankfully never had to experience what my nephew had to go through. when my sons saw what their cousin went through, they thanked me for having theirs done at birth. It is much more painful to be circumcised at the age of 5 years than it is to be done at birth. I hope this helps anyone who is trying to decide what is best for their baby boy.
Foreskin serves a purpose. Why else would it be there? It maintains pH levels. It protects the glands. It provides natural glide during intercourse to protect the woman's internal structure. And as for the fool who said a circ penis is easier to keep clean. How would you know if you don't have foreskin? If you wash daily you will be plenty clean. Even woman have smegma. SO by your reasoning I guess we should cut off the girl's labia so it will be easier to keep clean too?
The Circumcision Covenant is a Wound Covenant between Adamic (able to blush/show blood in the face Strongs Hebrew 119) males and the Almighty. It is an Israelite (not Jewish) eternal covenant. It involves removal of 5 to 8 mm of flesh from the tip of the foreskin- not the entire foreskin. The books of Paul dissuades circumcision and renders it as unimportant, however the Messiah says in Mathew 5: 17 that the Law and prophets will remain in force till the world stops turning and woe be to anyone that teaches otherwise!
Lwood, please educate yourself. Paul brought this very issue to the elders in Jerusalem and they determined that it was unnecessary for converts to practice circumcision. I t is an unnecessary and dangerous procedure that most of the world has left in their barbaric past. WHERE IT BELONGS. Yes Christ was circumcised, but he came to fulfill the law and bring us freedom! His payment ended our dept to the requirements of the law!
I am proud to be intact, exactly as GOD created me!
And i gladly face the ignorant ridicule of men whose parents mutilated and sexually crippled them.
CIRCUMCISION IS SEXUAL ABUSE!!!
I am Proud to be complete, as GOD created me to be!

I will be showing this to DH the next time we are pregnant. I have grown so tired of arguing the various points with him. I am avidly anti-circ but he is just as avidly pro-circ. What is a wife to do if we are also to submit? Ugh!
