There are lots of different telecommuting options you have when searching for a job to do from home. One of those is doing inbound customer service jobs for companies that are hiring. Basically, a position like this consists of receiving calls for a company and, just like a real job, they are looking for certain individuals with certain types of qualifications.
For the most part you will need access to a computer, the internet, a telephone, you will want to have a headset and also a home office is required by some companies.
What to Expect When Working From Home
When I worked an inbound customer service position I was pregnant with my now oldest son. We had set up a dedicated are in the home that I could use as my home office and I had to treat the position just like I would a real job. The company required me to work certain hours, in which I had to agree to and/or report ahead of time as well as at the end of the week.
I had gone out and purchased a headset because I didn't have one when I got hired...so when it was close to the hours I had dedicated to working, I would power up the computer, make sure my phone was charged (or sometimes the system I used would allow me to plug my headset right into the computer and accept calls that way) and I would then log into their system and wait for my first incoming call.
I had received some minimal training on how to use their system (most companies will do a day or two of training, some more - sometimes it's paid training, sometimes it's not) and within a few days I was pretty well versed on how to use the system and re-route the callers, if needed.
How Does Pay Work When Doing Inbound Calls?
Each company is different when it comes to payment options for this type of position. (In fact, before you get the position, some companies may even require a background check, and you sometimes have to pay for it.) I was usually mailed a check every two weeks.
Also, important to note is maybe of these companies consider you to be an inependent contractor or self-employed so you will have to report your earnings on your own at the end of the year. The good thing about this is that any expenses you incur while doing this position (like: a phone bill, internet bill, buying a headset or PC) are almost always now considered a tax write-off...so try to keep good records of everything you buy or spend money on while working a telecommuting job from home.
Finally, I don't believe any of the companies offer insurance and so you will have to consider looking for your own insurance, which can get pricey depending on how many people you have to insure an your medical condition.

great hub... anything similar available in Canada?
I've been working in a call center for the last 3 years in FL but I would much prefer to work at home. While my company does offer this, the programs are not Mac compatible. Has anyone ever heard of a virtual call center company that allows Macs. I've checked out about 30 w/ no luck! Help!
To Kristin, I would add that if you want to work from home for one of these companies, it might be worth purchasing a PC and learning to use it, if you are unfamiliar with it, as these companies have very specific requirements that you must meet before they will consider hiring you. It will be advisable for you to adapt - they can't do so due to infrastructure and quality assurance issues.
