Tips for Increasing Breast Milk Supply

If you are like many mothers who struggle with a fluctuating milk supply and you feel like your baby is not getting enough milk, know that you are not alone! I have now been breastfeeding for 5 years (60 months) between 3 children and so I know exactly how you feel if you are worrying about how to increase your breast milk supply.

The main tip I can share with you is to recommend that you just increase the amount of times you feed baby in a day. This may seem like a very time consuming task but if you truly feel that your little one is not getting enough milk, this really is your best option when it comes to increasing your milk.

If you really are feeling like baby is not getting enough milk in a feeding, another tip is for you to increase the amount of water you drink each day. Water is important in helping to make sure that you are getting the recommended daily amount of water, plus a little extra. Your body needs water to help make more milk and so increasing your water intake may dramatically increase your milk flow as well.

You may also want to consider using something like a breast milk tea to help increase your milk flow. You can drink them warm or cold, depending on your taste buds and they are believed to have ingredients in them that may help to increase your breast milk production.

If this product does not work for you, or you decide not to try this I have an alternative. I am a mother of two and am breastfeeding my second child. I produce too much breastmilk and I am willing to sell excess breastmilk to mothers that can not produce enough. If you are interested please contact me at mama_milk@yahoo.com

Mama Milk: that's interesting. I've read about mothers who sell extra breastmilk. They actually have a project where you can donate your breastmilk

I'm not sure if you're interested in going that route, but I thought I'd mention it...

I used a tea called Breastea from http://www.breastea.com when I was breastfeeding. It made a tremendous difference in how much breastmilk I could make. If you have low milk supply, you might want to try it out.

I was able to produce an average of 8-9 oz of breastmilk per pumping session(1-2x/day,everyday).From slacking off(pumping 1x every other day or 2,thinking I'd get more/session the longer I waited b/w pumpings)& not eating & drinking enough,I eventually depleted my supply w/in about 4 days to about 1 oz of milk/pumping & struggle 1/2 the time to get even 1/2 oz.What are the BEST teas or supplements I can take to increase my supply back to it's original amount,or close to,in the shortest time possible(if possible)?

I have done some researching myself & found that eating oatmeal, drinking plenty of fluids along with taking flaxseed, echinacea,& other supplements/herbs help w/ increasing milk production(about 2x the amount in a given amount of time-though I don't know the time period).Other things I have read that help with producing milk is plenty of rest, nipple stimulation & massaging the breast(a fun way for the hubby/boyfriend to get involved w/ brestfeeding-who says working on breastmilk production/feeding is the responsibility of the mother anyway?lol).Decreasing or even eliminating caffeine & sugar intake also helps.

I'm trying the oatmeal & increased fluid intake along with taking a breastfeeding supplement called EXPECTA LIPIL-available over the counter @ Walmart,Rite Aid,CVS,& other drug stores,& a prescribed prenatal vitamin called PRENATE DHA.So far it seems to help.

I'm giving some tips as well as looking for some help on this matter. Please send some tips if possible to my email, which should be hyperlinked.Thank you.

Hi Jade,

I didn't approve your comment with your email because I'm afraid you would get a lot of spam, but if you want me to I can. I will also email you this response though...

Unfortunately, I know this is probably not what you want to hear but the best way to increase your supply is to drink more liquids and pump a lot more! You noticed that your supply decreased when you started pumping less, right? You body thinks your weaning when you pump less so it starts making less milk and the only way to counter this is to pump more. Teas help, but they're not a cure all and your best method is to really just pump more. In the beginning you may even have to pump every half hour or hour, but as you continue to do it you'll notice your supply will increase and then you can start to spread it out a little more. I wouldn't suggest going longer than 3-4 hours MAX between sessions though once you do increase your supply. Or else you may find yourself back at square one again. And then of course make sure you are getting at least your 8 glasses of water a day, but you really need more while breastfeeding/pumping. And latch also matters, but that shouldn't be too much of an issue if you're pumping.

Oh yeah, you also will want to drain your breasts at each session so your body will think you need to make more milk (similar to a babies growth spurt, the body will know, ok, I need to make more milk because this is not enough).

As far as teas, I can recommend either of the 2: Milkmaid or Mothers Milk.

Hope all that helps and thanks for your comment!

I am nursing my second child, and it seems as though I am making a lot less milk and able to pump much less milk. My previous nursing bras don't even come close to fitting. My son nurses frequently (3 hours max) and cosleeps. He gained plenty of weight through 3-4 months old, but really stalled after that.

Perhaps I just don't have enough down time to nuture myself. These are all great tips. I'll give them a try.

When I was feeding my daughter I found that drinking fennel tea (made just from fennel seeds and hot water) was very effective in increasing my supply. Agnus Castus capsules (also known as chaste berry or vitex) was also very good, and I've heard that fenugreek is also a very useful natural remedy. I'm interested to hear that coconut can also do the trick.

Stacey 20 months ago

I personally have used Breastea, and it has worked great for me. I drink it daily.

Great job! I thought it also useful to point out that Fenugreek is an awesome supplement for increasing milk supply. My lactation consultant recommended it to me, and I was not disappointed.

Also, there are some foods that decrease milk supply, such as sage and peppermint, that should be avoided.

thanks for the comments and likes. i have also read that fennel and fenugreek are good for increasing breastmilk supply and most breast teas usually have them. Check the ingredients labels.

@BANTVA hadn't heard of coconut milk, thanks for that one.

@Katie I noticed I had that same problem with our second child. I am now nursing our third and know that as they get a little older and start moving, they start nursing less for a period and often go through phases.

@Moon Daisy thanks for the natural home made tip.

@Stacey glad that worked for you

@Kotori thanks for pointing both things out. But foods to avoid while breastfeeding is a whole other hub :o) but definitely important to point out

I have struggled with low milk supply since day one, but have been determined to breastfeed for at least 6 months. The first three months, this is all I used and had great results.
