4 Simple Ways to Improve Memory Naturally

As we age, it's only natural for us to begin to forget things. Funny how time works - we spend our first 20 or so years cramming information into our brains, and the next 50+ gradually forgetting it all! But don't worry - there are some ways you can naturally help improve your memory so that all those years of memorizing equations and dates were not in vain!

  1. One simple way to help improve your memory is by exercising. This doesn't mean a rigorous exercise routine or hours in at the gym. A simple walk around the block or even around the mall can help to enhance your memory (although fresh air is always a better option). You can also go for a bike ride, swim a few laps, or even do a jig around the house. Why or how does this help? Your brain depends on oxygen and nutrients to help it perform optimally. Without the two, your brain is not able to work as well.
  2. Another way to improve your memory is by stimulating your mind. One way to do this is by doing activities that cause you to think (like puzzles, games, or similar). Another way is by focusing. Sounds simple enough right? However, many of us don't focus or pay attention to any one thing long enough to allow it to transfer from our short to long-term memory banks. By simply taking a few extra seconds to focus on the thing that you want to remember, you can enhance your chances of remembering what you need to in the first place.
  3. Try to reduce stress in your life as much as possible. I say try because I know things constantly happen that we don't plan on, but you can be pro-active in the process of reducing your stress. One way to reduce stress is by finding an activity or pass-time you enjoy and making it part of your daily routine. Some people like to read, others enjoy a movie, some like to try acupuncture or hypnosis, and others find social or similar activities to be de-stressing. Whatever you enjoy that helps to relax you, do it. And try to do it at least once a week (preferably more). Why does this help? Studies have proven that stress hormones can contribute to a decline in your brains function, especially the memory. So by engaging in stress reducing activities, you can help to improve your chances of having better memory.
  4. Start eating a better diet. This should actually be number one, but for some reason when people hear the word "diet" they panic. Improving your diet doesn't always mean cutting out foods you love (although most times it is in your best interest). By simply adding foods rich in essential fatty acids and reducing the amount of carbs (white flour & sugar) you take in, you can do numbers on increasing your brains function, ability to remember things, and enhance your concentration. One place you can get essential fatty acids is in certain types of fruits, fish, or seeds. For a simple, yet effective, way to increase your memory, you may want to try adding some essential nutrients to your diet by supplementing with vitamins.

Making yourself memorize things helps, too, it seems. We have so many devices to remember the mundane, and most for the good, but it's hard to argue that memorizing someone's contact information doesn't make you stop and think about it.

Thanks for the article.
